Cover Me Urban: Food, Fashion, Drink, Music, Fun

On Wednesday April 5th, I had the opportunity of attending Cover Me Urban a fundraising event for Youth Without Shelter as a guest of Tangerine Bank.

The event was held to raise money and awareness about Ending homelessness…one youth at a time, one step at a time.

About Youth Without Shelter

Youth Without Shelter (YWS) is an emergency residence and referral agency serving homeless youth who are dedicated to providing shelter and support programs for homeless youth ages 16-24 and provide an independent shelter, committed to diverse client focused services, in a safe, nonjudgmental supportive environment. Their programs enable youth to live responsibly and independently in society.

Frustrated with the lack of safe, emergency housing and support programs for their students, in 1986 a group of teachers and guidance counsellors created Youth without Shelter. Since that time YWS has helped more than 15,000 homeless youth to build their confidence and life-skills and to find long-term stable housing and jobs. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they are dedicated to providing getting youth off the streets permanently by providing shelter and support programs in a safe environment.

Time to paint the Guest Bedroom! #PaintWithPremier

Time to paint the Guest Bedroom! #PaintWithPremier

I finished painting my living room in December. It should have been November but I kept putting off painting the trim. The next room on my list is the guest bedroom. I really like light colours, but may decide to go a little more dramatic. It is a small room, so I need to think of any DIY projects for that room at the same time.

I am the type of person that likes to paint one room at a time. Even if I select the same colour of paint for my entire home, I will still only paint one room at a time. I only want to move furniture one room at a time. I frankly don’t have the patience to do more than one room.

I don’t hire a painter, I instead, rely on my family and friends.  I host a painting party and provide food and cocktails. I get quick results. One room gets done quickly and my family and friends don’t mind coming in for a short period of time instead of an entire day or weekend of painting.

My Paint of Choice

I used the Canadian Tire Premier Paint for my living room. I noticed the new brand at the end of 2016. I picked the Premier Active. I was very happy with it, so I will choose this paint again. (Note to self, I must write a blog post about my living room). I do have a ton of CTMyPoints which I can also use to purchase my paint and accessories.

Check out the new Premier Formulation from Canadian Tire

Here is a chart to help you select the right paint for your room. You can select from Premier, Premier Active and Premier Infinity.

The bedroom is currently a creamy white colour so I won’t require great coverage like I did for my living room. I will select Premier regular line.  I will double check with the paint representative at Canadian Tire just to make sure.

You can check out all of the wonderful paint colours online. Click here to find the perfect colour for your next room! There are over 1,000 colours to choose from!

Don’t forget your paint accessories. There are specific brushes and rollers for each paint type.

Now I just have to select the colour, pick up my paint and accessories and then pick a date and time to host my painting party. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know!

Curvalicious Canada Looking for 12 Beautiful, Curvy Ambassadors

JOIN THE MOVEMENT - Curvalicious Canada www.curvycanadadiva.com is an organization where plus-size people can find a place to be themselves and meet like-minded people. We invite you to connect with us and get involved in our various events. Come to relax, party, meet new friends and be yourself without being judged. (CNW Group/Curvalicious Canada)

Calling all my sexy, curvy readers! Are you curvy and confident? Then this one is for you!

Are you ready for a chance to show your beauty? Curvalicious Canada is launching a curvy model ambassador search. They are looking for 12 confident, beautiful curvy ladies to be included in their 2017 Diva Calendar. There will also be a documentary made showcasing their lives.

Curvalicious Canada is an organization that allows plus-sized people to be themselves and meet new like-minded friends. It’s a place where everyone can be themselves without fear of judgment.

Starting from September 22, 2016, the Curvalicious team will be visiting 11 cities across Canada in search of 12 bodacious, confident curvy babes to be featured. The cities to be visited are Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Saint John, Charlottetown, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax.

To be considered, you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 19 years old and be a size 8 or more. More importantly, you need to be confident, strong, and PROUD of your figure.

Out of the 12 beautiful ladies, one winner will be selected by the public to become the next brand ambassador. The winner will receive:

  • A new 2017 car
  • A photo spread in Fashion Addition 14+
  • A sterling silver necklace with zirconia stones
  • 1-year modeling contract with Canadian Curves Model Agency
  • Cover on the Canada Plus Magazine

To learn more, watch this video:

I really love the idea that Curvalicious Canada is sending the message that ALL sizes are beautiful. Beauty isn’t just a number on the scale. Curvy ladies can be proud and healthy too. The chosen 12 belles will spread the message that confidence comes in all shapes and sizes.

The founder, Tracy Crosson, talks about her personal struggles and why she created Curvalicious Canada: “Personally, I struggled with being plus-size since the birth of my oldest child 28 years ago, once being a size six, now I am a size 24. When I was sixteen, I met a guy and had three kids with him. It was a toxic relationship and he was mentally, physically and emotionally abusive. Finally, after seventeen years I left him and I started feeling a lot better about myself, inside and out. I learned the importance of loving myself. Now, eleven years later, I am telling women my story and teaching them not to settle in any aspect of their lives.”

Curvalicious is a strong supporter of positive body image. All proceeds from calendar sales will go to the BCCA (Body Conference Canada Awards) and the NAAFA Canada Chapter (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance). Curvalicious Canada will also be donating toiletries to women’s shelters in cities across Canada.

So all my beautiful curvy ladies – get ready, put on a smile, and this could be YOUR chance!

April is #DaffodilMonth

April is #DaffodilMonth

Have you been seeing lots of beautiful yellow flowers pinned to the lapels of passersby lately?  That’s because April is Daffodil Month! All April, Loblaws is selling fresh daffodils across Ontario to support those people who live with Cancer.

I don’t think anyone hasn’t known someone who has been touched by cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is a huge evil that many of us know too well. But the good thing is, there is hope. Scientists are doing amazing research to get us closer to the cure, and there are so many incredible volunteers helping sufferers through the disease. There are so many wonderful resources out there, from wig workshops to family information centres.

Did you know that because of Canada’s growing and aging population, cancer cases will jump up by 40% by 2030? That’s one of the many reasons it’s so important to support such a great cause. The Canadian Cancer Society provides vital services to cancer sufferers and their families. Donations go towards funding life-saving research, and incredibly important support services like counseling. With our help, fewer people will have to suffer through the ravages of the disease.

Buying and wearing Daffodil pins will support the society both financially, and show people who suffer from the disease that they do not have to face the disease alone.

“Loblaw’s generous support for Daffodil Month is especially important this year,” explains Susan Drodge, Director of Corporate Partnerships for the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario. “As a charity, we must do whatever it takes to ensure we can meet the expected jump in demand for our support services over the next 15 years. It is comforting to have a partner like Loblaw in our corner.”

Stop by your local Loblaws, Zehrs, Valu-mart, Real Canadian Superstore and Your Independent Grocer locations across the province to pick up your daffodils! All locations will be selling daffodil pins, as well as fresh-cut and potted daffodils. For every potted or fresh-cut daffodil sold, the retailer will donate $2 to the great cause.

To date, the Canadian Cancer Society and Loblaws have raised over $221,000 through this phenomenal collaboration.

Fresh cut daffodils start at $4.99, and potted daffodils are $5.99. Pick yours up today!

Send me a photo of your freshly planted daffodils or tweet it here.

#BringBackTheBees

Honey bees have been ruling the world for the past 50 million (yes million!) years but there is bad news on the horizon for them – they’re starting to die out! Honey Nut Cheerios has started a new campaign to help try and shed light on this crisis.

Take a look at the following video featuring American entomologist Marla Spivak to find out more about the current crisis.

What can you do?

You can help turn this criss around by picking up some wildflower seeds and planting them in a garden near you! Go to the following link to enter the contest and get your free pack of seeds. Every entry makes you eligible to win one of five $5000 garden makeovers. The seeds will show up at your door, you can plant them wherever you’d like on a non-windy day, and you’ll have a beautiful patch of wildflowers in no time!

Fun Bee Facts

  • They’re Great Builders! – In 36 BC, Marcus Terentius Varro argued that honeycombs were the most practical structures around. Centuries later, Greek mathematician Pappus solidified the “honeycomb conjecture” by making the same claim,
  • There are over 20,000 different species of bees around the world!
  • Bees Can Recognize you – Honeybees make out faces the same way we do. They take parts—like eyebrows, lips, and ears—and cobble them together to make out the whole face. It’s called “configural processing,” and it might help computer scientists improve face recognition technology.
  • They-re super speedy – The honey bee’s wings stroke incredibly fast, about 200 beats per second, thus making their famous, distinctive buzz. A honey bee can fly for up to 9 KM, and as fast as 25 KM per hour.
