Roma Boots is Giving Poverty The Boot

I love my new Roma Boots, perfect for this wet season and best of all, Roma Boots is a socially conscious  company, merging fashion with philanthropy by donating a new pair to impoverished children living in cold and wet climates for every pair sold. How great is that?

Their mission is to bring impoverished children throughout the world hope, love, and lasting change through aid and education. For every pair of boots sold, a new pair is donated to a child in need. Additionally, ten percent of all proceeds funds educational initiatives around the world. Roma was founded in 2010 by Samuel Bistrian, who wanted to combine his love of fashion and philanthropy to help children in his home country of Romania.

roma2kids

Roma’s ultimate goal is not only to provide aid, but to educate. By doing so we will empower them to contribute their gifts & talents to society, eradicate poverty as a condition and a state of mind to make this world a better place.

Roma was founded by Romanian Samuel Bistrian in 2010 and is amor spelled backwards, which means love. It is also the proper term for the gypsy people, who are generally a poor, marginalized population that Roma initially provided most of their donations to.

Over the last five years, thousands of Roma Boots have been donated to children in need in 25 countries on 5 continents. Let’s help spread the word in Canada.

Roma Boots Canada has TWO collections

The Classic  Collection featuring 7 styles from a Chelsea Kale Lace to a whimiscal Short Turquoise Floral boot.

The Fashion Collection featuring 15 styles, with just the right boot for everyone from an Opinca Kale lace-up to a Classic Black Croc

My favourite is the Opinca Kale lace-up Roma Boot from their Fashion Collection, which go perfect with my (you got it) favourite jeans . I was thinking about purchasing another brand of boots, however when I read about how with every pair of Roma Boots sold, a brand new pair of Roma Boots is donated to street children and orphans around the world – Asia, Americas, Europe and Africa, I knew which boot brand I had to get. It’s important to me to support companies who are socially conscious and are making a difference in the world.

FullSizeRender

I’ve had my boots for close to a week now, loving every minute of comfort and style they provide. And as I mentioned before, the best thing about my new boots is I can help to change the world, one pair of boots at a time. Thanks Roma Boots!

Cover Me Urban: Food, Fashion, Drink, Music, Fun

On Wednesday April 5th, I had the opportunity of attending Cover Me Urban a fundraising event for Youth Without Shelter as a guest of Tangerine Bank.

The event was held to raise money and awareness about Ending homelessness…one youth at a time, one step at a time.

About Youth Without Shelter

Youth Without Shelter (YWS) is an emergency residence and referral agency serving homeless youth who are dedicated to providing shelter and support programs for homeless youth ages 16-24 and provide an independent shelter, committed to diverse client focused services, in a safe, nonjudgmental supportive environment. Their programs enable youth to live responsibly and independently in society.

Frustrated with the lack of safe, emergency housing and support programs for their students, in 1986 a group of teachers and guidance counsellors created Youth without Shelter. Since that time YWS has helped more than 15,000 homeless youth to build their confidence and life-skills and to find long-term stable housing and jobs. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they are dedicated to providing getting youth off the streets permanently by providing shelter and support programs in a safe environment.

The event was held at the Maison Mercer. It was fun filled night with great food, fashion, drink and conversation – all in support of Youth Without Shelter.

#MothersDay is Right Around the Corner!

Did you know that Mother’s Day is right around the corner? It’s this Sunday! I almost forget every year – this year I scheduled it into my work calendar so I can plan a special day for my mom well in advance! For those of you who are like me and forget every. year., here are some great ideas on how to treat your mom this Mother’s Day!

Your Mom is a special woman, we don’t need to tell you that (after all, she gave you the gift of life!) So celebrate with treating her to a fun day out, complete with the perfect presents.

Brunch

You really can’t go wrong with a good brunch! Order champagne or a bottle of wine before she swings by. Check out Toronto Life’s list of top restaurants of 2016 for some ideas – I’m taking my mom to Chabrol!

Here are some of my top picks for Toronto Mother’s Day brunches

Kasa Moto

Kasa Moto does a Japanese style brunch every weekend, and they’re amping it up for Mother’s Day! Expect bento breakfast boxes as well as some of the freshest sushi in the city.
Brunch starts promptly at 11 a.m.
Price: Prices vary

Biff’s Bistro

The newly renovated Biff’s Bistro is the perfect spot to bring Mom for Mother’s Day! Is your mother keen on Paris (okay, who isn’t?!?) The Parisian-influenced menu includes Fois Gras, frog’s legs, quiches, frites, and real-deal Parisian desserts. The menu is a-la-carte, and brunch starts promptly at  11 a.m. The resto also hosts a fondue night that evening at 5 p.m.
Price: Prices vary

Cibo Wine Bar
Bring mom out for an Italian brunch on Mother’s Day, and there’s no place in the city that does is better than Cibo Wine Bar. With locations on King West, in Yorkville, and at Yonge and Eglinton Cibo Wine Bar is hosting a special Mother’s Day edition of Italian Bubbles + Brunch, with a complimentary glass of Prosecco.
Price: $35

Portland Variety

This King West outpost has the look of a nouveau French bistro, but the food packs a punch. Espresso bar in the front (complete with freshly baked pasteries,) and restaurant in the back, their brunch continues to be the best in the city. Lemon ricotta pancakes, patatas bravas, I’m drooling already.

Price: $40

Manicure

I love treating my mother to a little spa day, but most Spa’s can seriously break the bank. Her Majesty’s Pleasure is a full service beauty boutique on Queen West My favourite part? The spa doubles as a full service cocktail bar so you can sip on fruity martinits while getting pampered.

Gift Ideas

I’ve put together a list of gifts that you can pick up that will make your mother swoon! Show your mom how appreciative you are of all the things she’s done for you with a heartfelt gift.

The Bay has a fragrance and beauty sale in honour of Mother’s Day. My mum has always loved Ralph Lauren – walking into a Ralph Lauren store today still smells like I’m walking into her room! This RL gift set has a fragrance, as well as hand creams.

Compliment mum’s good looks (after all, she gave you yours!) with stunning jewelry. I’m keen on this small pendant from Sears. You can shop for it here. Many people have very specific taste when it comes to jewelry. Take note of what your mum wears the most frequently. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a staple piece of jewelry like small diamond earrings or a meaningful pendant necklace she can wear on a day to day basis.

Foldover Clutch - Aqua

Aqua Foldover Clutch

Knotted Tote - Ivory

Classic Ivory Tote

Did you know Indigo isn’t just a mecca for books? It also is a one-stop-shop for gifting. From it’s recent jewelry collaboration with Canadian designer Jenny Bird to a wide selection of home goods, look no further than Indigo for all your gifting needs! I’m thinking my mother would love a bag in a pastel spring colour like the one above,

Is your mother a whiz in the kitchen? Mine sure is. There’s really nothing like coming home for a holiday for one of my mother’s incredible home made meals – flatbread pizza, eggplant parm, I’m drooling already! Canadian Tire is offering in honour of Mother’s Day – like this GORGEOUS copper cooking set. Check out their sale here.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6" 16GB Android 5.0 Lollipop Tablet - White

The Samsung Galaxy tablet is one of the newest surfaces to hit the market, so it’s decked out with all the greatest features. Your mom can download books, catch up with relatives on Facebook, and view family photos, all with a swipe of her finger! Swing by Best Buy to pick one up.

How are you celebrating this mother’s day? And what gift have you decided on to treat your mother with? Let me know in the comments below or tweet at me @ShesInfluential

On McHappy Day, one dollar from every Big Mac®, Happy Meal® and McCafe® beverage will be donated to Ronald McDonald House locations across Canada. When you donate $5, you will get a fun pair of McHappy Day Hero Socks! Here’s a photo of mine. Why are they called hero socks? Because when you purchase a Big Mac, Happy Meal, or McCafe beverage, you’re helping families in 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada be close to their loved ones as they go through terrifying treatments.

Were you ever sick when you were little? Even today when I get sick – all I want is my mom right there beside me, making me soup and keeping me brave! That’s what Ronald McDonald Houses do – they make sure children can have their loved ones beside them while they get better.

mchappyday1

McHappy Day takes place on Wednesday, May 4 at participating McDonald’s® restaurants across Canada. Every year, McDonald’s gives you a chance to give back to the community by making a difference in the lives of Canadian families and children. By supporting McHappy Day, yyou’re supporting hundreds of local children’s charities. You’re also helping over 20,000 Canadian families that use the 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across the country every year.

When families stay together, kids heal better!

McHappy Day Helps Out Families In Need

McHappy Day is McDonald’s biggest fundraising event every year where $1 from every Big Mac® sandwich, Happy Meal® and McCafé® beverage goes to 14 Ronald McDonald Houses® and various children’s charities.

This year, you also have the option of adding a $1 donation when you use the self-order kiosks when playing your orders. This ensures more families and children in the local communities benefit from McHappy Day.

All donations raised on McHappy Day supports the 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada that provide temporary housing for out-of-town families whose children are being treated at a nearby hospital. Your $1 donation helps support over 20,000 families who need the accommodation while their child undergoes treatment.

About Look Good Feel Better

Look Good Feel Better is Canada’s only charitable cancer program dedicated to empowering women to manage the effects that cancer and its treatment can have on their appearance. At the heart of Look Good Feel Better is the free, 2 hour hands-on workshop offered at 120 cancer care facilities and hospitals across the country. Since its inception, it is estimated that Look Good Feel Better has helped hundreds of thousands of women across the country.

What is the Cancer Blues? It’s a term for the emotional distress caused by cancer and its treatment. The Cancer Blues is a huge and overlooked part of the cancer story. For the majority of women, a cancer diagnosis unleashes as many emotional symptoms as physical ones.

Let’s Bridge #TheHealthGap with Women’s College Hospital Foundation

Let’s Bridge #TheHealthGap with Women’s College Hospital Foundation

We’re very lucky to live in a country where we don’t have to pay exorbitant amounts for regular doctor’s checkups. But as much as it’s a beneficial system, in many areas, women are being overlooked.

Research done by the Women’s College Hospital found that women’s needs, including physiology, cultural challenges and life circumstances are not taken into consideration.  Women in marginalized or disadvantaged communities have it even worse – they are even more frequently overlooked. That’s what we call the Health Gap. The health cap overlooks women, and disallows them access to the proper health care. The current state of the health care system overlooks the individual needs of each gender.

“The Health Gap significantly impacts women’s health and their quality of life. As a world leader in advocating for and advancing the health of women, Women’s College Hospital felt it was our responsibility to raise awareness of this important issue” says Marilyn Emery, President and Chief Executive Office of Women’s College Hospital. “With many health conditions, women present differently than men and require treatment and care that recognizes the differences between genders. This is often exacerbated by various societal factors that impact many women – family responsibilities, cultural biases or stigmatization – leading to additional barriers to accessing care and creating a Health Gap which must be addressed.”

The wonderful team at Toronto’s women’s College Hospital have identified just exactly where women aren’t receiving the top care.

Healthcare Research – Women are more at risk for certain diseases. Women’s bodies also adapt to different treatments How important is this to research into? Research trials are tested more frequently on men, so women are disproportionally leaning towards men.

Cardiac Health – Every year, heart disease takes more women’s ‘s lives then men. But,  only 35% of research study participants are women.

Mental Health – Women experience depression twice as often as men. Women are also three times more likely than men to experience barriers when attempting to access mental health care. Women also have to deal with  periods, cramps, pregnancy, and menopause. All significant  life events that come with lots of lots of emotions.

Those are just a few of the areas that wome are being seriously overlooked.

Read more here

Women’s College Hospital is working hand in hand with the health gap to do some groundbreaking research and make advances towards equality.

“Incredible, groundbreaking work is happening at Women’s College Hospital every day and it’s impacting not only the patients who walk through our doors, it’s helping to advance the health of women across the province, the country and around the world,” said Emery. “We’re reaching out to our partners and colleagues throughout the health sector and asking them to join us in affecting change and to help us close the Health Gap for women.”

I’m pretty outraged about this. But we can be part of the amendment. On April 11th, Women’s College ran a campaign to help spread the word.

Declutter Your Life with Schtick Intuition

We all know that simple is better, but how often do we actually follow that? According to recent research by Schick Intuition, the happiest mothers in Canada take active steps to simplify their lives.

Do you have a lot of clutter around your house? I Know I do. Old t-shirts from high school, knick knacks from travel, it all adds up so quickly! I know, it’s seriously time to declutter my life. But how do I go about doing that?

Schick intuition is there to help us!

There’s proof that simple is better.According to recent research by Schick Intuition, the happiest mothers in Canada take active steps to simplify their lives. (CNW Group/Schick Canada)
There’s proof that simple is better.According to recent research by Schick Intuition, the happiest mothers in Canada take active steps to simplify their lives. (CNW Group/Schick Canada)

The new Schick intuition was tested on 750 moms, who all said that they LOVED the new Shicck.

The research showed that 29% of moms are happy, 38% are neutral and 33% are unhappy – but moms agree that simplifying improves happiness, with 92% saying that simplifying aspects of their life would make them happier.Out of the moms who said they were happy, the majority said that they are happier when their life is simplified. No fussy routines, no clutter, no mess!

“The Schick Intuition Simplicity Curve shows that happiness can be a by-product of consistently and deliberately choosing to do things that make life less complicated,” says Christine Jew, Brand Manager, Schick Intuition. “Canadian moms who take the steps to actively simplify various aspects of their lives are clearly reaping the emotional benefits.”

So how do you declutter your life?

Step one: get rid of your extra stuff! If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to throw out those old clothes. Knick Knacks? If it would look just at home in your crazy Aunt’s house it’s time for it to hit the garbage can. Be ruthless with your purging! I promise you will not regret it!

Step two: declutter your work week life. Having a rough day? Order in dinner! Find a way to distress after work and indulge!
Step Three; Declutter your work – organize your emails and make a calendar (and stick to it!)
Watch this quick video to find out how you can declutter your life! Have any tips? Let me know in the comments below or by tweeting me at @ShesInfluential
